Originally, there were not going to be any queer relationships in this year's novel. In fact, aside from a background married couple (my MC's parents), there were going to be no romantic relationships at all.
Now, I have a cross-dressing pirate who is hopelessly in love with a woman who tried to poison him.
And my 14-year-old FMC has a crush on that same woman (she doesn't know about the poisoning episode).
And so does the FMC's dad, a happily married family man, who is a friend of the woman's but also doesn't know about the poisoning episode.
None of them have a chance in hell, as the love interest hates the pirate and wants to kill him, is not a child molester, and doesn't want to break up her friend's marriage. But for a supposed-to-be-romance-free novel, this is rapidly approaching a soap opera.
